MIU STEM Innovation Lab

What is MIU STEM Innovation Lab?

  • MIU STEM Innovation Lab is a space built within a community to bring the community members – kids, educators, parents, and industry experts together to encourage the activity of digital making. It links people from different sectors and backgrounds to come together in a community context to contribute to the spreading and mastery of digital-making knowledge.

  • MIU STEM Innovation Lab acts as a multipurpose resource room used by different classes and educators to build and make different kinds of STEM products – ranging from microcontrollers, robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. It should have a conducive and positive learning environment where anyone can learn new skills and share ideas on their digital project.

  • Equipped with tools, materials and learning resources made available for its members that could help nudge them to invent and embark on a digital making project. Showcasing past projects can be crucial in giving inspiration to members that are new to the scene.

  • MIU STEM Innovation Lab hosts and run meaningful activities, lessons and meetups between educators, mentors, and students to play a role in supporting the objectives of the STEM movement.

The Epitome of Convergence

MIU STEM Innovation Lab is more than just a center that enables digital making to take place. It is also a center for open and collaborative network of educators, students, and industry expert to converge in creating and providing the right space and exposure needed to get the STEM movement started. STEM Exploring Lab will be the main center that connects key players together, share resources, collaborate, and reach out to the youth of Malaysia in a more systematic and efficient way.

MIU STEM Innovation Lab may be called differently such as a Smart lab, Digital Lab, smart classroom, and many more, but its aim should remain the same which is to create more innovative young minds and actively bringing ideas come to life.

Why MIU STEM Innovation Lab?

MIU STEM Innovation Lab is a place that empower educators and students focusing on STEM in the context of Teaching & Learning (P&P)

STEM is an P&P approach that involves the application of knowledge, STEM skills and values ​​for problem solving in a daily life context, community and environment as below. This approach encourages students to ask questions and explore the environment through inquiry and solving problems related to the real world towards cultivating STEM practice

STEM education is lifelong education that includes learning which formally integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics based on the curriculum. STEM education can also be implemented non - formal through co -academic and co -curricular activities. STEM education can contribute towards producing a society with STEM literacy as well supplying a highly skilled STEM workforce that can contribute to new innovations.

Digital Fabrication Studio

Digital Fabrication Studio is a space providing fabrication services to allow students to integrate digital modelling into fabricated physical objects. It is a place to help students make their designs come to life and turns passive users into active creators. 3D printing is becoming vital now as it gives a whole different power in creating.

Testing Space

A testing space should be open enough for students to test ideas, prototypes, or projects with minimal obstructions. Students need an open space that allows them to test the functions and features of their designs. Students can also readily make any adjustments to their projects in this space.

Prototype Studio

A space where students get to build physical prototypes of the actual product to test every concept of their design. These prototypes use basic everyday materials. (Highly recommended: recyclable materials). Students need to build physical models of their ideas. It helps students to visualize concepts and ideas.

  • Paper / cardboard / straws / plastic products

  • Make.do / Strawbees

  • Binding materials (tapes, adhesives, binders, fasteners)

  • Cutting tools (scissors, blade)

Creative Lab

Creative Lab is a space where students can turn their ideas into codes using their preferred programming languages. It will also be where students can learn how to make websites, apps, games and even programming microcontrollers to receive input and set an output. Students can do anything that requires coding and programming here at the creative lab.

  • Strawbees Kit / Quirkbot / 

  • LiteBee Brix / LiteBee Wing / Drone:bit

Electronics Corner

A corner in the hub is for electronic building activities. Students use this space to solder their circuits and test their circuitry using equipment like a multimeter. The students can utilise this area using the provided electronic tools, soldering equipment and general components. Please note that this corner should have ventilation for fumes from soldering activities.

  • Soldering iron, soldering tips, solder pump & solder flux

  • Wire stripper, wirecutter

  • Multimeter, power supply

  • Breadboard, donut board, strip board

  • Electronic components & microcontrollers

Design Thinking & Invention Literacy Space

A place where students can meet and have meaningful brainstorming sessions and quality discussions among themselves. Students can also conduct their research on their ideas. The need for a collaborative environment stimulates innovative ideas, improves students’ argumentative skills and manages differing opinions in a discussion.

  • Bean bags and cosy chairs

  • Whiteboard

  • Flip board

  • Stationary (colourful markers and various sizes of Sticky Notes)

We believe that MIU STEM Innovation Lab should be a space that supports creativity and test new ideas. It should be spacious enough for students and users to work comfortably and collaborate with each other. Key components of our MIU STEM Innovation Lab :
